  1. What laws prevent discrimination relevant to housing?
    1. Civil Rights Act of 1968 under Title VIII (also known as the Fair Housing Act)- prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status, and disability.
    2. Civil Rights Act of 1964 under Title VI- prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin in programs and activities receiving federal funding
    3. Rehabilitation Act of 1973 under Section 504- prohibits discrimination based on disability in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance
    4. Housing and Community Development Act of 1974, under Section 109- prohibits discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, or religion in programs and activities receiving financial assistance from HUD’s Community Development and Block Grant Program
    5. Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 under Title II- prohibits discrimination based on disability in programs, services, and activities made available by public entities. Enforced by HUD in cases related to public housing and housing assistance.
    6. Architectural Barriers Act of 1968- requires buildings designed, constructed, altered, or leased with Federal funds (after September 1969) to be accessible by handicapped persons
